Appearing in Courts to safeguard the Council interest in cases filed by various parties, by sitting the Colombo Municipal Council as party, which are taken for trial in various Law Courts.
To file action against external patties and implementing of powers vested in the Council under the Provisions of the Municipal councils Ordinance, through Council By Laws and any other consequential acts.
Providing necessary advice to settle problems arisen in other department of the Council.
Preparation of Agreements entered into by the Council and attending to all matters related to them.
Filing action against ever increasing unauthorised constructions and to implement powers vested in the Council under the Urban Development Authority Act.
Appearing on behalf of the Council on inquiries conducted by the labour Department.
Appearing on behalf of the Council, before Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka.

During the Office hours customers can get information of the present states of their files.
Legal Department is opened to Public during office hours on any working days.
The relevant Legal Officers can be met after 2.00 p.m. daily on week days.
Special Notes
Main objective of the Council's Legal Department, when providing services, is to execute the service responsibilities with utmost dedication and commitment in order to safeguard the interest of the Council, from the time of initial notification made by a court of law to the council, until the time of awarding the final Decree.
