The Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) will introduce parking metres for the Colombo city for the first time from January 1, 2016.
According to Mayor A.J.M. Muzammil, under the first phase of the project, launched as a Private Partnership Project (PPP) two roads will be covered.
"The project includes installation of about 140 parking metres along the entire Galle Road, R.A. de Mel Mawatha and all by roads connecting these two roads. It will take six months to complete the installation of 40 parking metres," the Mayor said.
When the parking meter system is in operation, motorists can pay parking charges by cash, touch cards or using a mobile application specially developed for parking payments. Parking fees are now collected manually by traffic wardens deployed by the CMC.
